“Dear cholesterol, sorry I had to kick your ass but….”

#SorryNotSorry is more like it. I attacked it with insatiable violence and I’d do it again in a heartbeat (which I’ll be having quite a lot more of because I kicked cholesterol’s ass). Did I mention my cholesterol is down?

During my last blood work in April 2014 (I don’t like needles, can you tell?), I showed borderline to higher-than-normal levels in three of the six lipid panel (cholesterol) tests Kaiser administers.

I went in for a blood test on Saturday and here’s what it showed:

  • Cholesterol – down 28 points
  • Triglycerides – down 12 points
  • HDL – up 2 points (that’s the “good” cholesterol)
  • LDL – down 27 points
  • Cholesterol/HDL – down .06
  • Cholesterol/non-HDL – down 30 points

I credit all of this to diet, exercise and quitting smoking. I have not taken a single statin in my life. I do not take niacin supplements. I am not vegan or vegetarian – not that there’s anything wrong with that.

The holidays are upon us and it’s a tough time of year for caving in to poor eating habits. I’m not gonna lie. I will be eating some cookies and other sweets. But instead of the full-scale derailment of Christmases past, I’m going to have a taste here and there, go run a few miles and feel freaking awesome about it.

This is definitely one of my top three proudest accomplishments of the year. Boo ya!
